Guest | One last issue before I can close the wing. Leading edge slats. I've read a bunch on these things and the jury might still be out on their effectiveness, especially on a small model. Couple that with their small structure, will they build straight, how to attach them, what material to use, could they screw up the basic wing effectiveness. This has been a tough one. But I think I have enough of an idea to start with and see how it develops. The LT25 wing is not very thick and the leading edge has a pretty shallow rise. Slats are supposed to match the original leading edge profile on the outside so as to not change the basic wing design. They create a large opening at the bottom of the wing tapering down to a smaller exit as close to the top of the airfoil as possible to accelerate the air where it would normally separate at high angles of attack. All that combines to make for a pretty thin slat on this wing. (See picture) ![]() I'm going to try my best idea today and I'll either take pictures of the process or scrap the idea all together. There is no question the wing is a good one just the way it is. I think my incentive is the "cool factor" more than anything else.

Guest | OK .............. So Slats it is :)![]() This is how I built them, using progressively smaller dowel rods and piece of ABS pipe as a jig to keep them straight. ![]() Mounting was a bit more difficult but I eventually got there. ![]() The underside was filled, sanded and painted the top was filled just on the ends so you will not see the dowels after covering but the rest of the length just sanded a little to flat spot the dowel so they look like stringers and then covered. ![]() Lots of stuff to work around, remove and reattach etc etc on these wings but colors are selected and we have commenced to cover. ![]() Here is a good shot of the slat and the junkers flaperons. I am starting to get excited to get this out to the field. [ Edited Wed Jul 23 2014, 04:47am ]

Guest | Trimming is finished as far as my limited artistic genes can get me.![]() I don't get the benefit of a more sophisticated eye so this one kind of turned out like my personality.....Evel Knievel on top.... ![]() Silly underneath!! ![]() Getting excited to get it out to the field ![]() Still have some work to do on the inside but maybe the next post will be a pilot review!!!

Guest | No pictures but a quick pilot report: see video at [link] AND [link] As expected the very first takeoff made it clear the wing has a ton maybe two tons of lift. It also is kind of "dirty" now from the added stuff stuck to it and the Kadet doesn't slip through the air as easily which causes it to fly a little slower than usual. Not a problem but the "higher, faster, farther" part of my personality noticed it. Aileron authority was surprisingly less effective than what I thought they would be, not bad but very docile considering the amount of throw. Flaps slow it down to an absolute crawl, I was able to grease the very first landing no problem, the suspension worked and looked awesome to me, I could see it flex a little on the landing....looked really good, but I'm a little prejudice. Brakes work but I am going to have to practice with them and they are probably going to be an adjustment thing. When it touches down you can see the gear flex and there is absolutely no bounce....it sticks!! The brakes need some redesign so they will grab, hold better and still release clean but I don't think that is going to be any problem, got some good ideas from an old GM engineer that fly's with us. That right tire was actually turning on the hub so I need to stick a couple small screws around the rims to keep the tires from slipping on the hub. I am going to have to confess the only real concern I have is I may have under powered it. It fly's "scale" but when you fly like I do, slow and close to the ground, I am used to getting out of trouble with power. The power from the Magnum Pro 30 even with the help of the Max Muffler is just not enough to make me feel comfortable enough relying on......when not if.....I get too slow and low at the same time. Outside of the power thing I am exceedingly happy with the initial flights. Ya the roll rate is less than I expected but all the concern over trimming out the ailerons was really not an issue. I do have more tests to run on the aileron trim because the elevator trims down for level flight and I think I can get that out with trim on the ailerons. Which could produce a cleaner (less drag) attitude on the wing as well. Have to try a few things. Another pretty satisfying characteristic is when flaps are deployed the plane just slows down like magic, there is absolutely no pitch change....it's remarkable. I've never had any plane equipped with flaps that didn't need a correction when the flaps came down. This one just stays right where it was.....you could throw them in at any time you wanted to and not worry about how the plane was going to react. I normally throw them in higher up on the landing approach and you can see in the video on one of the landings I put them in pretty low on that landing. So now....the shop is scheduled for some Family Woodworking Projects over the next couple weeks but then I have some more airplane projects cued up. One of them is because of the results we got on this creation, I am commissioned to build the same configuration using an LT40 by one of my fellow club members, this time with a .61 in it. Got to love being a Kadet Flyer!!! [ Edited Fri Aug 29 2014, 10:18pm ]
